Genny arrived the Saturday, just after dawn with a small tote-bag and a folder of tickets and brochures. She clambered in the back while Corentin held the seat for her, and Kit leaped onto his arm and scampered to his favourite position on Armel as he settled into the Driver’s seat.
Corentin spluttered from his face-full of tail-fur, “Are you taking him with?”
“…cheee…” Kit shrilled at him from the safety of Armel’s head-rest.
“There’s no ban on pets anywhere we’re going.” Genny shrugged from the back seat as Corentin clicked the seat into position and got in himself.
“Where are we going to first?” Armel grinned as he turned down the hill, “You’ll have to be on point if you’re going to direct me.”
“Just follow the main road through the village and head north for about forty minutes.” Genny rustled a map somewhere behind Corentin’s back, “Helen took me there when I was a girl, it’s called Barnenez and it’s very old.”
“Like a museum?” Armel asked.
“You’ll see for yourself when we get there.” Genny smirked, “I like surprises, even if you don’t.”
“This is the same road we took from the ferry to get here.” Corentin remarked after some time winding through forest and hill, over creek and dale.
“Yes, it’s only the last twenty kilometres or so that are different.” Genny sipped from a water bottle. “Almost everything I want to show you isn’t very far in any direction. When you talk about South Africa, I struggle to imagine that you lived three hours away from each other, and you considered yourself ‘neighbours’. Turn right down that road, Armel. There is a parking area where we can leave the car.”
“What is that?” Armel squinted at the mound as he pulled into a bay. Aside from a Tourist Bus, they were the only other vehicle.
“It’s called a ‘passage tomb’.” Genny waved at the heap of rock placed on an open area on a small peninsula, surrounded on almost all sides by the sea. “It’s one of the biggest, and parts of it are also one of the oldest buildings in Europe.”
“Look there, it’s got the same style as our top wall and over there is the same as the terraces.” Armel nudged Corentin, and pointed “Do you think they were the same builders?”
“Come, follow me.” Genny gestured walking briskly and Kit bounded after her. The men shrugged at each other and sauntered in pursuit. “Here we are.” Genny had stopped more than halfway down the long mound, next to two passage entrances close to each other. “This is what Helen came here to show me. That passage on the left is your family passage, and that one on the right is mine, or so she says.”
“Say, what now?” Corentin peered stupidly at the cairn. A cool wind from the sea tugged at his hair and he felt a shiver run down his spine.
“According to Helen, your family used that passage to hold ceremonies and blessings and marriages and bury people in the room at the end of that passage.
